Sponge on the Run is a new movie that is launching exclusively on Paramount+, the next iteration of CBS All Access.  The film is an all new adventure featuring the ridiculousness that you have come to expect, but animated in a 3D world.  The first thing you'll notice about this is the animation: the Spongebob movie is animated in 3D with all the major characters transformed into three dimensions.  And overall it looks great.  I was hesitant at first, given that the characters are so well known in their two dimensional forms, but the change to 3D is surprisingly not distracting.  The animation is well done and the characters keep their mannerisms, expressions, and overall craziness.  And that is the most impressive thing about this adaptation, that it is able to keep the same randomness, craziness, and Spongebob style in a longer format.  It just seems to fit and after the initial wow factor, it just feels like more Spongebob.  Plus, the film has some really enjoyable cameos that put a smile on my face.

The movie itself has a silly story that puts Spongebob on an adventure to save Gary.  In typical Spongebob style, it doesn't really make sense but allows you to interact with everyone from the Spongebob world and some new characters that are introduced for the movie.  And overall the movie is random silliness that should entertain kids and kids at heart.  There is plenty to laugh and smile about and if you are a fan of the series, you will definitely apprecaite it.  However, the film does have some scary stuff that might make this not a great fit for young kids.  And some of the name calling, while not bad, might likewise not be great for young kids.  But if you have a soft spot for the sponge under the sea, then this is a great excuse to try out Paramount+.

Spongebob Squarepants: Sponge on the Run updates the animation and adds some stellar cameos but keeps the characters, silliness, and craziness that makes Spongebob what it is.

Watch it.
