2020 World Series Champions: Los Angeles Dodgers Review: A High Quality Summary of an Unforgettable Season

Release date: December 8, 2020
Running time: 90 minutes
Starring: Vin Scully, Mookie Betts, Corey Seager, Clayton Kearshaw

The Los Angeles Dodgers™ are World Series® champions of 2020. On a quest for redemption after losing the World Series in 2017 and 2018, the Dodgers clinched their 2020 title in six games against the Tampa Bay Rays™ during a season – a year – so unique.

You know if you're going to want to get this already without actually needing this review.  You either are a baseball or LA Dodgers fan or you're not.  If you are the former, this set is a great way to relive this unique season and the overall World Series.  There were a lot of unprecedented aspects of this season that will hopefully not be repeated such as no fans, a compressed season, and delays and game cancellations due to COVID outbreaks that might make this documentary / summary appeal outside of Dodger nation.  And there are some very touching scenes, like footage of the first time that fans were allowed in the stadium.  The player's reactions to this, despite the reduced number, was something special to see.  And there were also interesting questions from players, like whether interviews needed to be masked or not.  It really was such a strange year and seeing little moments like this reminded me just how unlikely even playing baseball was, let alone having a World Series.

However, the film does a lot in 90 minutes, but that leads it to feel very compressed at times.  It has a good build up for what the Dodgers did to prepare for this season (mostly getting Mookie Betts), and then some of the difficulties with COVID.  But then the season itself is pretty compressed until you get to the World Series games, where it has a short sequence on each one.  It makes the season itself and all the games that lead to the series feel like they needed more time to explore.  And although there is a segment on each of the World Series games, it still only includes some highlights and commentary.  Fans of the team or baseball in general will probably want to spring for the 8 disc collectors edition coming in February that has all the World Series games in their entirety and plenty of additional footage.

On top of the general documentary, the disc contains some additional special features that give a few nice additions to the Dodgers's story this year.  There is a feature on Season Highlights, a "How They Got Here" featurette, a feature on Clinching moments, and some post game interviews.  Nothing that will make or break your decision, but nice additions for fans.  And the set also features some stunning footage in HD.  You get some really great highlights and shots from the season, and some inside commentary from some amazing players.

2020 World Series Champions: Los Angeles Dodgers summarizes this unique and unforgettable season with some stunning highlight footage and inside commentary.  However, fans of the sport or team might want to wait until the 8-disc collectors edition is released in February.

Rent it.
