The often delayed remake of the 1998 Disney classic, "Mulan," finally has a release date, but it might not be what you were hoping for. As requested by fans Mulan is coming to Disney+ on September 4, however, it is coming with a $29.99 surcharge. As revealed on the company's earnings call, this $29.99 fee is a departure, but one that Disney felt it needed to do in this time. It is important to note that Disney clarified that this fee is not a rental fee, if you pay this you will own a digital version of Mulan. And although this might help blunt the blow, this price still does seem high for a movie that will be coming to a service that you probably already subscribe to.
Bob Chapek, Disney's CEO, said the pandemic has forced the company to think of "different approaches" to better serve consumers. "We thought it was important to find alternative ways to bring this exceptional family friendly film to them in a timely manner," he said on the company's third quarter earnings call.
Chapek added that "Mulan" will be released simultaneously in theaters in markets where Disney+ is not available and, of course, where theaters are open.
Disney's move comes as a host of movie studios have explored the direct to digital market. Trolls: World Tour kicked it off to great success, and several other studios have since sent movies direct to the home market in the wake of massive theater closures.
