Review: Ben Platt Live from Radio City Music Hall

Release date: May 20, 2020
Running time: 85 minutes

Ben Platt Live From Radio City Music Hall is a recorded live performance by Ben Platt.  Captured before a live audience at Radio City Music Hall, this feature-length special documents Tony, Grammy, and Emmy-Award winning performer Ben Platt at the final stop on tour for his debut album, Sing to Me Instead.  The show is a full length concert with Ben singing pretty much the entire time.

As you would expect from a Tony, Grammy, and Emmy-Award winning artist, the music is very good.  Ben Platt is a talented singer and his performance highlights his voice and musical talent.  He also is a natural performer and although some of his on stage antics look a little silly, the entire show is entertaining.  I especially liked the emotional songs, where the camera zooms in on him and he gets to showcase his vocals.  The camera work really captures his on stage presence.  Additionally, as with many live performances, the songs are separated with Ben telling stories about his life or inspiration for the songs he is performing.  It gives us some insight into this performer, his backstory, and some of his motivations.

However, one thing that might disappoint more casual Ben Platt fans is the lack of any of the Broadway songs he is known for.  Many people will recognize Ben from his multiple award winning Broadway shows, and the lack of any songs from these is a let down.  His music is good and the tour is meant to highlight his new album, but this fact might limit the mainstream appeal of this show.  Regardless, the show is a treat for Ben Platt fans and those stuck at home looking for a concert experience.

Ben Platt live will give fans exactly what they want, a close up performance by the award winning performer, but the focus on his album might disappoint more casual fans.

Rent it.
