Weekend box office, August 2 - 4, 2013: 2 Guns leaves Smurfs 2 feeling blue

2 Guns took the top spot with $27.3 million, higher than the debuts of Wahlberg's other 2013 films--Broken City and Pain & Gain--and Denzel's 2012 film Flight (but far from their 2012 hits Ted and Safe House). The Smurfs 2's weekend was dulled by its Wednesday release, but it accumulated $27.7 million by Sunday. That's disappointing when the previous film grossed $35.6 million during its first three days. Its $80 international opening indicates a decent worldwide performance. The Wolverine will take the dishonor of lowest-grossing X-Men film from 2011's First Class in America, but has already made over $150 million overseas.

Despicable Me 2 helped make this July the second most successful ever, taking in more than the next three biggest money makers--Grown Ups 2, The Heat (beating nearly all July releases despite premiering in June), and The Conjuring--combined. I wouldn't have predicted that lineup months ago with the hype surrounding The Lone Ranger and Pacific RimTurbo is tracking worse than Dreamwork's last disappointment Rise of the Guardians, which finished with only $103 million. Blue Jasmine looks like an indie hit, and The Spectacular Now made a promising $50,000 per theater debut at 4 screens. See how other movies performed here.
